The Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenperin RI) together with the Indonesian Automotive Institute (IOI) has held a Rural Vehicle Design competition by inviting all universities in Indonesia. This activity is intended to increase student interest in the automotive industry, improve the rural economy and build a competent industry to produce domestic vehicles. There were 21 teams that sent designs to the competition committee consisting of universities (PT) throughout Indonesia. Judging Phase I of the Rural Vehicle Design Competition in Jakarta involved judges including the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, IOI, the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII), automotive practitioners and several other parties.

The rural car design team from Diponegoro University succeeded in being included in the top 5 best designs presented at the Rural Car Design Expo in Bali on (9/3). This team consists of Mechanical Engineering students from Diponegoro University with a core team consisting of Aditya Ispramudita O, Dedy Teja Mukti, Sabilly Rasyad and is supported by the Solidworks Design Team in the Department of Mechanical Engineering UNDIP. This team is guided by Dr. Rifky Ismail, ST, MT.

“Obviously proud to be able to introduce the concept of a rural car. The hope is that this rural car concept can be accepted and in demand by rural communities,” said the head of the UNDIP Gentayu team, Aditya Ispramudita O (21).

The rural car expo was attended by the Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics (ILMATE) of the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, I Gusti Putu S and the President of the Indonesian Automotive Institute, I Made Dana Tangkas. The RI Ministry of Industry and IOI want a rural car that is multifunctional, simple in design, easy and inexpensive to produce. With this contest, it is hoped that it can become the forerunner of the nation’s progress by increasing domestic potential, one of which starts with rural cars.

The concept offered by the Diponegoro University Gentayu Team itself is to create a multifunctional vehicle concept that functions to transport goods, agricultural machinery and passengers. This car uses a diesel engine of less than 1000 cc so that the ability of the car becomes more powerful and powerful.

“Mobil Gentayu UNDIP didesain dengan bentuk yang sederhana agar dapat mudah diproduksi dengan biaya yang murah namun tetap mempertimbangkan aspek estetika yang baik,” sebagaimana dijelaskan oleh Dosen Pembimbing Dr. Rifky Ismail, MT.

“The advantage of the UNDIP Gentayu Car design is that there is a rear tailgate that can be widened if needed, for example to run agricultural machinery so that we can take advantage of the space from the widened car tub. Besides that, it can also be used for village communities to sell food and so on,” he said.

The UNDIP Gentayu team received a lot of electronic and print coverage from the national media because of its simple but attractive design. The UNDIP Gentayu car managed to steal the attention and become the cover story of several national media coverage. For the next development, it is hoped that the research and development of this rural car will continue to be carried out so that it can become a candidate for one of the rural cars whose design will be used as a reference by the Ministry of Industry to be transformed into a national rural car.
